Lagos govt arrests 62 street beggars, children in Ajah, Lekki

The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps has apprehended 62 individuals in a recent enforcement operation targeting street begging in the Ajah and Lekki regions of the state.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, announced the arrests in a post on social media platform X, highlighting that the operation resulted in the capture of 29 street beggars and 33 children suspected of being exploited for begging activities.
Wahab confirmed that all individuals taken into custody have been transferred to the appropriate authorities for further processing.
This operation follows a prior enforcement effort during which 215 street beggars were detained in various parts of Lagos. Wahab reported that this earlier initiative involved the apprehension of 152 males, 46 females, and 17 young adults, underlining the state government’s intensified efforts to address street begging and disorderly conduct.
The enforcement operations are part of the Lagos State government’s wider strategy to maintain public order and enhance environmental sanitation, ultimately aiming to create safer and more organized public spaces throughout the city.
