Lagos: Opebi-Odoiya Alaro Bridge to open before holidays – Sanwo-Olu

LAGOS, Nigeria – Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State announced Tuesday that the Opebi-Odoiya Alaro Bridge will open to traffic before the upcoming holiday period. The announcement comes after delays attributed to the installation of a significant steel monument at the project site.

Sanwo-Olu provided the update on X, formerly known as Twitter, following an inspection of the bridge to evaluate the construction progress and reasons for the delays. Previously, the governor had indicated that the bridge would be operational by the end of September, in accordance with the project’s original timeline.

The steel monument, designed to commemorate the area’s historical significance as Cane Village, features four hands weaving cane. This structure aims to honor the cultural heritage of the region, which was known for its cane market and is intended to serve as a distinctive landmark along the road corridor.

According to Sanwo-Olu, three of the monument’s four steel sections have been assembled and installed, with work ongoing for the final component. “The monument is now 80% complete and we need just a few more days to finish the work,” he said.

The governor emphasized that safety considerations have delayed the bridge’s opening, ensuring that every section of the monument is securely in place before allowing traffic. “Safety remains our priority so we cannot open the road until every section is securely in place,” he stated.

Acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the delay, Sanwo-Olu urged motorists to remain patient, reassuring them that the bridge will be operational before the holiday season to facilitate smoother travel along the route.
