Lagos Police Operative Arrested Following Shooting Incident that Killed Young Girl

LAGOS, Nigeria — The Lagos State Police Command has announced the arrest of Assistant Superintendent of Police Omotayo Olajide in connection with the shooting death of a young girl, Omole Taiwo, and the injury of another child during a violent altercation in the Ajegunle area.

The shooting occurred Thursday in the Nosamu neighborhood, where two rival groups, known as the Nosamu Boys and Alayabiagba Boys, were engaged in a conflict over toll collection. Both groups were reportedly armed with cutlasses and other weapons.

According to a statement released Saturday by the police spokesperson, Superintendent Abimola Adebisi, ASP Olajide was dispatched to the scene amid the disturbances. Upon arrival, he allegedly discharged his firearm, resulting in injuries to the two girls.

The victims were transported to Ajeromi General Hospital for immediate medical treatment. While one girl was subsequently transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in Ikeja, she did not survive her injuries. The second victim remains hospitalized but is currently in stable condition.

“The Command expresses its deep sorrow over the loss of a young life and shares in the grief of the bereaved family,” Adebisi stated.

ASP Olajide has been disarmed and taken into custody. The case has been referred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a comprehensive and impartial investigation. The inquiry will seek to clarify the events surrounding the incident and determine the suitable legal and disciplinary actions. The police have committed to keeping the public updated on the investigation’s progress.
