Lassa Fever: Nigeria Records 1,115 Confirmed Cases, 263 Deaths In 2026 –

Nigeria reported 1,115 confirmed cases of Lassa fever and 263 deaths from January to September 2026, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC). The case fatality rate has increased to 23.6%.
The latest Lassa Fever Situation Report, which covers Epidemiological Week 38 (September 14-20, 2026), indicated a decrease in new confirmed cases, with 11 reported during that week, down from 17 in Week 37. New cases emerged from Ondo, Edo, and Taraba states.
The NCDC noted that 24 states have recorded at least one confirmed case across 119 local government areas since the beginning of the year. Five states—Bauchi, Ondo, Taraba, Benue, and Edo—accounted for 87% of the confirmed cases.
The agency highlighted that individuals in the 21-30 age group remain the most affected demographic. Additionally, no new infections among healthcare workers were reported during Week 38.
The current figures show a slight increase compared to Week 37, when the cumulative totals were 1,104 confirmed cases and 259 deaths, with a case fatality rate of 23.5%. This year’s case fatality rate is significantly higher than the 18.5% recorded during the same period in 2025.
Lassa fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic illness endemic to parts of West Africa. The NCDC emphasizes that early diagnosis and prompt treatment are vital for improving survival rates. The agency urges Nigerians to remain vigilant and seek medical attention if symptoms indicative of Lassa fever arise.
