LASTMA Impounds 84 Vehicles in Weekend Traffic Crackdown
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) impounded 84 vehicles during a weekend operation targeting one-way driving and other traffic violations in Idumota, Iddo, Ijora-Olopa, Costain, and Onipanu.
According to a statement from LASTMA, the crackdown is part of ongoing efforts to restore order on major traffic routes and enforce compliance with traffic regulations. The agency noted that persistent infractions by motorists and commercial bus operators have impacted road safety and impeded vehicle movement.
One significant issue identified during the operation was the practice of commercial buses reversing against traffic along the one-way stretch from Iddo to Idumota via Cater Bridge. LASTMA described this behavior as dangerous, stating that it poses a risk to motorists, commuters, and pedestrians who may not have adequate warning of oncoming vehicles traveling in the wrong direction.
“Motorists and other legitimate road users approaching the bridge may have little or no forewarning that a commercial vehicle is unlawfully reversing against the prescribed direction of traffic, thereby creating an extremely hazardous situation,” the agency emphasized.
The operation faced resistance, with some LASTMA personnel reportedly attacked while performing their duties. Several individuals accused of assaulting officers and damaging agency vehicles were subsequently apprehended.
General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, characterized the operation as a timely intervention to address a growing disregard for traffic regulations. He stated that the agency has consistently warned transport operators and commercial drivers against using under-bridge spaces and unauthorized locations as illegal garages, stressing that such practices hinder effective traffic management and pose significant public safety risks.
Bakare-Oki said the ongoing campaign aims to improve compliance with traffic laws, discourage dangerous driving practices, and protect the safety of all road users. He reiterated that no individual or group would be permitted to occupy public roads or bridges for illegal loading, parking, or vehicle repairs.
LASTMA urged commercial operators, motorists, and transport unions to cease one-way driving, dangerous reversing, illegal parking, indiscriminate loading, and the use of unauthorized garages or under-bridge areas. The agency warned that continued violations would result in enforcement actions under existing Lagos State traffic laws.
The public is encouraged to report dangerous driving, traffic obstructions, and other violations through LASTMA’s toll-free short code, enabling the agency to respond swiftly to prevent avoidable incidents on Lagos roads.
