LIVE: Furious Smith undone by ‘fat bails’

Usman Khawaja is the latest Aussie batter to cop a painful blow.

He went to duck under a short one that didn’t bounce and wore it straight on the forearm.

“That’s hurt him … that can be nasty. That’s not a good area to be hit,” India great Ravi Shastri said in commentary for Fox Sports.

Khawaja copped one on the finger last night, as did Marnus Labuschagne. Steve Smith also wore one in the shoulder late in the day.

The groan the could be heard through the effects mic made this writer feel the pain, and he’s never played any cricket higher than second grade in Darwin.

And none of those bowlers were as fast as young Jamal is.

This will start to make Pat Cummins think. It might not be a bad idea for him to potentially declare a little earlier than he might otherwise, just to protect his bowlers a little.

Either way, Khawaja is battling on for now.

Labuschagne was taken for scans last night, but was seen batting in the nets this morning. His availability for the Boxing Day Test at the moment remains unknown.
