LIVE: West Indies stunned by ‘terrific’ Smith catch

Marnus Labuschagne has formed a reputation as one of the luckiest batters in world cricket.

In the second innings of the first test against the West Indies, Labuschagne was caught off the bowling of Alzarri Joseph, but replays showed Joseph had oh-so-slightly overstepped.

It was just another stroke of luck in Labuschagne’s career.

Since his debut in test cricket, he’s been out caught 20 times. But he’s been dropped 16 times.

That translates to a conversion rate of just 55.5 per cent. Only one batsman in international cricket – Sri Lanka’s Dimuth Karunaratne – has a lower conversion rate.

His Test batting average sits at 59.31. According to Fox Cricket statistician Lawrie Colliver, if all those catches were taken his average would be just 44.

“I’ve certainly had the rub of the green on many occasions of late,” Labuschagne said.

“I think it sort of comes in waves – there were times there when I was in Pakistan and I felt like the green was not rubbing the same way.

“You’re never going to complain when you’ve got a bit of the rub of the green. Cricket’s a funny game and the tide turns.”
