Nigerian Actress Oby Kechere Passes Away at 27
Oby Kechere, a Nigerian actress and film director best known for her role as Ms. Koi Koi in the 2002 comedy classic Aki na Ukwa, has died at the age of 27. Her death was announced by Uche Agbo, the National President of the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN), on Saturday.
Agbo conveyed that Kechere passed away on April 27, 2026, following a prolonged illness. In a statement, he expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating, “It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Madam Cecilia Oby Kechere, Vice Chairman of the DGN Abuja Chapter.”
He continued, “Madam Cecilia was a graduate of Theatre Arts from the University of Ibadan, a committed professional, and a valued member of our guild. Her contributions to the growth and unity of the DGN, particularly within the Abuja Chapter, will never be forgotten.”
Agbo extended his condolences to Kechere’s family, loved ones, and members of the Abuja Chapter, saying, “May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace.”
Kechere, originally from Mbaise in Imo State, Nigeria, began her career in the film industry, popularly known as Nollywood, in 2001, with her first appearance in the widely recognized August Meeting films.
