Make collective interests major priority – Gov Otti tells Igbos
Governor Otti Urges Unity Among Igbo People at Igbo Day Celebration
UMUAHIA, Abia State — Abia State Governor Alex Otti called on the Igbo community to prioritize collective interests over individual differences during his remarks at the Igbo Day celebration on Tuesday.
Addressing attendees under the theme “Ohanaeze: History and the Dreams of Tomorrow,” Otti emphasized the importance of courage, resilience, enterprise, and communal values inherited from Igbo ancestors. He stated these qualities are essential for the progress of the Igbo nation.
“Unity does not mean unanimity of opinion on every issue,” Otti noted. “It is a consciousness that our individual desires cannot take precedence over the aspirations of the majority.”
John Azuta-Mbata, President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, echoed Otti’s sentiments, highlighting the need for the Igbo people to define their future both for themselves and for Nigeria. He stressed that cohesion is vital for the Igbo to claim their rightful place in the nation and the global community.
“Our people must bind together. We must deliberately move together so that we can take our rightful place in Nigeria and the world,” Azuta-Mbata said.
During the event, Azuta-Mbata joined Governor Otti in laying a wreath to honor the memory of those who lost their lives during the Nigerian Civil War from 1967 to 1970, which claimed more than three million Igbo lives from various families.
