Stars captain Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out of Melbourne’s next game against Perth after injuring his forearm during the side’s 103-run drubbing to Brisbane in the BBL‘s season-opener on Thursday night.
Maxwell suffered the injury whilst batting at No.4. in what was his first innings since returning home from Australian duties in India — which included a record-breaking double century at the World Cup.
The 35-year-old winced in pain and gestured to his right forearm after smashing a boundary off Heat paceman Spencer Johnson.

Having already bowled he was able to continue batting but called for the trainer twice before having his forearm heavily strapped.
Maxwell finished with 23 runs from 14 balls after his reverse sweep was picked out by Matthew Kuhnemann.
After undergoing scans in Melbourne on Friday, Maxwell was withdrawn from the Stars’ squad for their next match on Wednesday, with the team stating he will start his rehabilitation immediately.
After hosting the Scorchers, the Stars have a nine-day break before their next clash on December 23.
The gap between matches will no doubt gift Maxwell more time to recover and will hopefully see him back in the green uniform sooner rather than later.
Right-arm quick Nathan Coulter-Nile will also undergo scans this weekend to learn the extent of a calf injury he picked up while bowling.
Coulter-Nile has a long history of soft-tissue injuries, playing just seven games in an injury-riddled BBL12.
“They are both soft tissue so we’ll have to see how they scrub up,” Stars coach Peter Moores said of the squad’s injuries.
“Hopefully both aren’t too bad but we’ll just have to wait and see.”
Heat international Colin Munro was left stranded on 99 not out after smashing nine four and five sixes.
The Stars were bowled out in 15 overs as they tried to chase down the Heat’s total of 214 at the Gabba.
