Mercy Johnson faces backlash over N25,000 menstrual kit

Criticism Arises Over Mercy Johnson Okojie’s Role as Brand Ambassador for Girls Tag

Mercy Johnson Okojie has faced significant online backlash following her recent appointment as the brand ambassador for Girls Tag, a menstrual care brand whose product is sold at 25,000 Naira.

Girls Tag, which markets itself as an all-in-one period care pack for individuals aged nine and older, was officially launched with Johnson and her daughter, Purity Okojie, serving as ambassadors. Shortly after, actress Regina Daniels was also announced as a brand ambassador for the company.

The launch has provoked criticism on social media, where many have labeled the pricing as unrealistic and insensitive. Concerns have been raised regarding the financial struggles faced by numerous Nigerian women and girls, who often resort to unsafe alternatives or miss school due to lack of access to basic menstrual products.

Comments on social media reflected this sentiment. One user, @Lai, stated, “Not everyone is a philanthropist! Nigeria’s problems are not everyone’s problem.” Another user criticized the pricing, saying, “In a country where women are struggling to afford sanitary pads, you want to charge 25,000 Naira for them,” referencing Johnson’s involvement.

Further critiques included comments on societal elitism, highlighting that sanitary products should not be treated as luxury items. User @Rebekah pointed out, “How many Nigerians can realistically afford 25,000 Naira monthly for a basic necessity?”

Others expressed frustration at the perceived disconnect between celebrity endorsements and the economic realities faced by many Nigerians. “Majority of Nigerian celebrities don’t actually stand for anything; all they care about is their bottom line,” remarked @Olaámi.

As discussions continue to unfold, the reaction to Girls Tag’s pricing strategy underscores the challenges surrounding access to menstrual products in Nigeria.
