Methane emissions: Ogun, FG intensify inestigation in Ijebu-Ode, assure residents of lasting solution

Ogun State Government Collaborates with Federal Authorities to Address Methane Emissions

IJEBU-ODE, Nigeria — The Ogun State Government is increasing its collaboration with the Federal Government to investigate and mitigate ongoing incidents of methane emissions in Ijebu-Ode and surrounding communities. Officials have assured residents that concrete steps are being taken to identify the sources of the emissions and prevent future occurrences.

This initiative comes in response to four reported incidents of gas emissions that have caused a persistent unpleasant odor, raising health and environmental concerns among local residents.

In a statement released on Tuesday by Hon. Kayode Akinmade, the Special Adviser on Media and Strategy to Governor Dapo Abiodun, authorities highlighted the formation of a joint investigative team comprising experts from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and development partners.

The team, led by NUPRC Deputy Director Mr. Omonedo Prosper, is currently analyzing emission patterns and potential sources based on preliminary reports from state government officials regarding prior interventions.

The NUPRC delegation reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the Ogun State Government and relevant agencies to determine the cause of the emissions and formulate a sustainable response.

Akinmade emphasized the state’s intention to promptly share the findings of the investigation, implement necessary preventive measures, and provide health support and monitoring for affected communities. He specified that Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu East, Odogbolu, and other areas within Ogun East are under assessment as investigations continue.

“The Ogun State Government is committed to implementing the recommendations from the investigative team once their work is completed,” Akinmade said. “We believe that collaboration with the Federal Government and research institutions is essential.”

The government reiterated its dedication to ensuring the welfare and safety of local residents, affirming its commitment to ongoing engagement with federal agencies and technical experts until the issues are fully resolved.

In related developments, Professor Ikhane Phillips, Head of the Department of Earth Sciences at Olabisi Onabanjo University, explained that geochemical analysis would be essential in determining the gas’s composition and source, while geophysical investigations will help trace its underground movement.

Commissioner for Environment Mr. Ola Oresanya also noted that the state is working closely with federal authorities to address the situation. He urged improved information sharing to alleviate public concerns and advised residents to take precautionary measures during episodes of the foul odor, assuring them that the gas is not hazardous.

Ijebu Para’po Info Media has lauded Governor Abiodun and the NUPRC for their prompt action and efforts toward a lasting resolution of the emissions issue. The group commended the state government’s responsiveness to residents’ concerns and expressed optimism that the ongoing investigation will lead to effective solutions.
