Mexico finally clears Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s ambassador

Reno Omokri announced his new diplomatic role on Wednesday via a post on his social media account. He revealed that José Manuel Briseño Flores, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Mexican Embassy in Abuja, delivered an agreement to Ambassador Babagana Wakil, the Director of Protocol in Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Omokri will serve as the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to Mexico, with additional accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
In his announcement, Omokri expressed gratitude, stating, “To God be the glory, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Abuja, Mr. José Manuel Briseño Flores, today in Abuja delivered the agrément from the Government of the United Mexican States accepting me, Bemigho Reno Omokri, to serve as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Mexican States.”
President Bola Tinubu nominated Omokri for this position in November 2025, alongside 68 other candidates, which included former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode and former Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu. The Nigerian Senate confirmed the nominations in December 2025, and on March 6, 2026, the President approved the posting of 65 ambassadors-designate, with Omokri assigned to the Mexican capital.
