Nigerian Military Denies Allegations of Undermining Democracy
ABUJA — The Defence Headquarters has dismissed allegations that the Nigerian military is undermining democratic authorities. In a statement released Monday, Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, emphasized the Armed Forces’ commitment to constitutional order and civilian rule.
Gusau characterized the claims as “false and misleading.” He asserted that the military conducts its operations in accordance with lawful directives and in support of national security across the country.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain loyal to the Constitution and democratic institutions of the country,” he stated. “Any suggestion that the military is undermining democratic authorities is unsubstantiated.”
He also urged the public to disregard misinformation that could incite unnecessary panic. Gusau reiterated the military’s dedication to protecting the nation’s territorial integrity while respecting democratic governance.
