‘Misplaced Priorities’- Delta gov under fire over viral church ushering video
Nigerians have expressed criticism toward Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori following the release of a video depicting him and his wife, Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, performing ushering duties at a church service.
The video, shared on social media by the governor’s media aide, Ossai Ovie Success, shows the couple ushering worshippers and dancing during a Sunday service at Winners Chapel in Osubi, Delta State. Success accompanied the video with a message stating, “Delta Governor doing ushering work in church today,” and described the couple as being “active” in their duties and dancing to God during the service.
However, the footage has generated mixed reactions online, with many viewers condemning the governor’s actions, labeling them as a political stunt.
Critical responses on social media include various comments. One user, @JoshJayv02, questioned whether this was truly the governor’s work, expressing skepticism about the sincerity of such public displays. Another user, @KhalebIO, urged the governor to focus on governance rather than what he characterized as “nonsense posturing,” asserting that managing the lives of citizens is a more significant responsibility than performative acts.
Other users echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing a desire for genuine governance rather than theatrical displays. User @Adenry questioned the ethical values imparted by the version of Christianity practiced by some Nigerian leaders, while @I amDRE noted the timing of the governor’s church appearance in relation to upcoming elections.
Statements from social media also included calls for the governor to demonstrate true Christian principles in his governance rather than in isolated, public acts of worship. Some, like @UzowuruE, criticized the perceived disconnect between the governor’s public persona in church and his political actions.
Critics also highlighted issues of governance in Delta State, with user @BanksTariq emphasizing the lack of infrastructure and youth development programs in the region. Concerns about the appropriateness of political actions taken within a religious setting were also raised, with several users questioning if such activities could contradict biblical teachings.
The video’s emergence and the ensuing backlash underline ongoing frustrations with political leadership in Nigeria and the expectation that elected officials prioritize substantial governance over public relations stunts.
