Mixed reactions, expectations trail Chelle’s new Super Eagles’ $100,000 contract
Super Eagles Coach Eric Chelle Signs New Contract with NFF
Eric Chelle, head coach of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, has signed a new contract with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), officially ending months of speculation following the conclusion of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) earlier this year.
Chelle’s negotiations with the NFF extended over several months, beginning with a comprehensive 19-point proposal submitted in January. Among his requests was a monthly salary of $130,000, which would also cover compensation for his coaching staff. In contrast, the NFF reportedly offered around $100,000.
Clinton McDubus, a prominent football analyst, commented on Chelle’s contract, saying, “Considering what he has accomplished so far and the outlook for the future, it is worth it. Other African nations are eyeing him as a strong candidate right now.”
Chelle was appointed as head coach in January 2025 with the primary goal of qualifying Nigeria for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, the team fell short, losing to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the continental playoff final. During AFCON, the Super Eagles faced Egypt and Morocco, losing both matches in penalty shootouts.
Despite these setbacks, McDubus noted Chelle’s impressive performance in transforming the team. “He has established a clear playing philosophy and improved overall execution on the pitch,” he said. “The integration of new talents has revitalized the national team.”
Under the new agreement, Chelle will also assume responsibility for Nigeria’s Under-23 team, with the objective of qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Nigeria has not participated in the men’s Olympic football tournament since winning bronze in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
McDubus praised the expansion of Chelle’s role, suggesting that it allows for a smoother transition for younger players into the senior national team. “It’s a brilliant idea,” he said.
As the Super Eagles prepare for upcoming AFCON qualifiers, the pressure mounts on Chelle to deliver results. McDubus expressed optimism regarding Chelle’s future with the team, highlighting the positive momentum seen during AFCON 2025. “Chelle’s team is the most impressive Super Eagles squad I have seen since the 90s,” he asserted.
