Motorist escapes unhurt as train collides with vehicle in Lagos

A 55-year-old driver narrowly avoided injury after a train collided with his Honda vehicle at the PWD Railway Line in Lagos. The incident, which involved a train heading towards Agege, resulted in severe damage to the car, identified by its registration number EKY 902 JT. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
Officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) responded promptly to the scene, collaborating with security personnel to rescue the driver and clear the wreckage from the tracks, allowing the train to proceed on its journey.
Despite the swift removal of the damaged vehicle, traffic congestion lingered in the area surrounding the PWD axis.
In a statement released on Friday, LASTMA reported that the damaged Honda was subsequently transferred to security personnel for further investigation into the circumstances of the collision.
Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, praised the agency’s operatives and security teams for their quick action and cooperation during the incident. He emphasized the importance of inter-agency collaboration and prompt emergency response in mitigating the impact of accidents involving trains and adjacent roadways.
Bakare-Oki urged drivers to exercise caution when approaching railway crossings and emphasized the dangers of crossing tracks while a train is approaching or already in motion. He warned that neglecting railway safety regulations can have severe consequences.
LASTMA called for all motorists and road users to remain vigilant, to use sound judgment, and to adhere to traffic and railway safety regulations. The agency highlighted that responsible behavior and compliance with safety directives are crucial in preventing avoidable accidents.
“The preservation of human life must remain paramount in all road-use decisions, as preventable collisions can be averted through responsible conduct, anticipatory caution, and strict observance of safety instructions,” the agency stated.
