Physical cheating and emotional cheating are two different types of infidelity that can occur in relationships, and they can have distinct impacts on a relationship. Here’s an overview of each:
Physical Cheating:
Physical cheating refers to engaging in sexual or intimate activities with someone outside of the committed relationship.
It typically involves actions like kissing, sexual intercourse, or any other physical contact that breaches the boundaries of the relationship.
Physical cheating is often seen as a breach of trust and can lead to feelings of betrayal, anger, and hurt in the betrayed partner.
The consequences of physical cheating can include relationship breakdown, separation, or a need for couples therapy to rebuild trust and address the underlying issues.
Emotional Cheating:
Emotional cheating occurs when one partner develops a deep emotional connection with someone outside the relationship, often without engaging in physical intimacy.
It can involve sharing personal and intimate thoughts, feelings, and secrets with the other person, which are typically reserved for the partner in the committed relationship.
Emotional cheating can be just as damaging as physical cheating, as it can lead to feelings of emotional betrayal, insecurity, and a breakdown of intimacy within the primary relationship.
Rebuilding trust after emotional cheating can be challenging, as it involves addressing the emotional bond that developed with someone else.
It’s important to note that different people may have varying definitions of what constitutes cheating, and what one person considers cheating, another may not. Trust, communication, and mutual understanding are crucial components of a healthy relationship. When infidelity of any kind occurs, it’s essential for couples to have open and honest discussions about their boundaries, feelings, and expectations to work through the issues and decide how to move forward.
Every relationship is unique, and the response to cheating, whether physical or emotional, can vary greatly depending on the individuals involved and the specific circumstances.

I am hopelessly and emotionally invested in a man outside my marriage. I met him during one of the many episodes when I was sad and depressed from my husband’s constant cheating which has been going on for years. This man calls me every night and we talk for hours about everything. I tell him things that I never told anyone else, and he listens. We hang out at least once a month, in open places like restaurants. He’s tried to kiss me a couple of times and didn’t push each time I declined. Although all I want is for him to wrap his arms around me and take all of me. He’s just….present and kind. Doesn’t help that he looks really good and seems affluent—he pays for everything. This has been going on for more than one year now. He’s like air for me. I’m so happy and always look forward to speaking with him. Even my husband noticed that I have changed and commented that the constant fights that I used to have with him over his cheating are no more. Now I don’t know what to do. I think of him all the time
