Navy rescues Bayelsa commissioner, others after boat mishap

The Nigerian Navy has successfully rescued Bayelsa State Commissioner for Trade, Industry, and Investment, Mrs. Ebiere Jones, along with six other passengers following a boat accident in the Abedigbene waters of Brass Local Government Area. One police officer, part of the eight-person crew aboard the vessel, is currently unaccounted for, as search and rescue efforts continue.
The operation was conducted by personnel from the Navy’s Forward Operating Base, FORMOSO, in collaboration with local divers and members of the Abedigbene fishing community. This information was detailed in a statement from Base Information Officer SLT Joshua Dauda, which was shared with journalists in Yenagoa on Friday.
Dauda reported that naval personnel promptly mobilized to the site after being informed of the incident and initiated rescue operations. “Upon receiving the information, personnel of FOB FORMOSO swiftly mobilized to the incident location and commenced search and rescue operations,” he stated.
During the operation, seven of the eight passengers were successfully recovered, including Jones, an officer from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and five other individuals. Following the rescue, the survivors received first aid at the houseboat, and initial medical assessments indicated that none had sustained visible injuries. Subsequently, Jones and the other rescued passengers were transported to Yenagoa on Friday to reunite with their families.
In comments regarding the operation, Capt. Sunday Haruna, Commanding Officer of FOB FORMOSO, commended the naval personnel for their swift response, dedication, and professionalism. He also expressed gratitude to local divers and the fishing community for their assistance, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between security agencies and local communities during emergencies.
Haruna further highlighted that the successful recovery of the seven passengers underscores the Navy’s readiness to safeguard lives and maintain security in its maritime area of responsibility. He assured that the base would continue to prioritize maritime safety while enhancing its relationships with communities in its operational area.
