According to a new poll, former President Donald Trump would absolutely dominate the 2024 Republican presidential primary field in a hypothetical matchup.

The survey was conducted by Reuters/Ipsos.

Trump Leads Second Place DeSantis By An Astounding 43 Points

Survey participants were asked, “Thinking about the presidential election in 2024, who would you support as the Republican nominee for president?”

A strong majority – 54 percent of Republicans – said that Trump was their top choice.

The survey was taken from December 13-17, 2021, in which 4,406 adults overall participated.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis came in second after the former president with 11 percent support. Doing the math, that puts DeSantis 43 points behind Trump.

In third, was former Vice President Mike Pence who garnered eight percent. Pence was followed by former U.S. ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley who received four percent, and Sen. Ted Cruz at three percent.

Receiving two percent or less as potential presidential candidates in 2024 were Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Sen. Marco Rubio, Sen. Josh Hawley, and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

14 percent of Republicans still said they were “not sure” who they might support for president in the next general election.

Trump Has Not Said Whether Or Not He Plans To Run For President Again In 2024

When looking at favorability, 46 percent overall had a favorable view of Trump, while 56 percent said they had an unfavorable view of the former president.

When only Republicans were asked, 82 percent of Republicans have a favorable view of Trump, and 52 percent of GOP voters said they had a “very” favorable view.

Trump has teased more than once that he could run for the White House again in 2024, but no formal decisions or announcements have been made about what the future might have in store for him.

In what may be troubling news for Democrats as we head into the 2022 midterm elections, the survey also found that, “over half of Americans (56%) believe the national economy and the country generally is headed in the wrong direction. This is driven primarily by Republicans (81%), but over half of independents (59% and 63% for each) agree as well.”
