Niger miners’ death: Atiku reveals what survivor told him
Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress and former Vice President of Nigeria, has reported disturbing accounts from a survivor of the recent incident involving miners who died while in the custody of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu, on Thursday, Abubakar recounted his visit to Niger State, where he met with the families of the deceased miners and spoke with one of the survivors. The survivor indicated that a total of 68 people were confined in a small detention facility under dire conditions.
Abubakar shared that the survivor described extreme circumstances, including a lack of water that led detainees to resort to drinking urine in order to stay hydrated. He characterized the recounting of these events as harrowing and said, “No Nigerian should ever be subjected to such indignity in the custody of his own government.”
The incident has prompted both federal and state authorities to initiate investigations.
