Nigeria @66: There is still much to be done — Gov Okpebholo

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo addressed the nation on the occasion of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, emphasizing the progress made so far while acknowledging the work that lies ahead. In his message delivered on October 1, 2026, Okpebholo reminded citizens that achievements to date serve as foundational steps for further development rather than a conclusion.

He commended Edo residents for their resilience and reinforced that the government is dedicated to serving the people’s interests, encouraging open dialogue even when the feedback is challenging. The governor expressed appreciation for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s initiatives aimed at repositioning Nigeria for future success, describing the Renewed Hope Agenda as essential for the nation’s revival.

Okpebholo noted that this agenda has already started to foster economic stability and growth across the country. He urged citizens to use the anniversary as an opportunity to renew their commitment to peace and unity, asserting that true patriotism is demonstrated through the treatment of one another and the safeguarding of public assets.

Furthermore, Okpebholo affirmed his administration’s dedication to ensuring the safety and security of Edo residents, stating that maintaining peace is fundamental for farming, commerce, and overall economic activity.

“We have worked hard to make Edo safer. We are improving our roads, upgrading schools and hospitals, and creating jobs for our youth,” he said.

The governor pledged continued collaboration with security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders, and other partners to enhance local safety and governance. He cautioned those considering any actions that could disrupt the state’s peace, asserting that Edo is not a refuge for criminal behavior.

In closing, Okpebholo wished the people of Edo a peaceful celebration and offered prayers for the ongoing progress of the state and the nation.
