Nigeria joins league of nations in global measurement pact

Nigeria Achieves Global Recognition for Measurement Standards
By Adaobi Abimbola
Nigeria has officially entered the ranks of countries with internationally recognized measurement standards, following the signing of the Mutual Recognition Arrangement (CIPM MRA) of the International Committee for Weights and Measures. The agreement was finalized in France during the 28th General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM).
Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, Director-General of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), signed the agreement. This milestone coincides with his third anniversary in office.
According to a statement from Mrs. Ethan Talatu, SON’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Nigeria’s status as an Associate State of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) became effective on June 4, 2026.
The CIPM MRA serves as a framework that allows national metrology institutes to demonstrate the equivalence of their measurement standards, enabling their calibration and measurement certificates to gain global recognition.
Okeke highlighted that the agreement will enhance international recognition of Nigeria’s measurement capabilities and facilitate the global acceptance of its calibration certificates. He emphasized that it would promote easier cross-border trade, reduce reliance on foreign metrology services, bolster SON’s technical authority, and create opportunities for scientific collaboration and capacity building.
With this development, Nigeria joins Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, South Africa, and Tunisia as one of the few African nations with full BIPM membership. This advancement is expected to benefit manufacturers and small businesses by allowing for local testing of products, which can increase trust internationally without incurring the expenses associated with foreign laboratories.
