Church of Christ Leader Responds to Controversial Remarks by Islamic Cleric
BARKIN LADI, Plateau State — Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo, the Regional Chairman of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) in the Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, has issued a statement in response to controversial comments made by Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir regarding Nigeria’s religious identity.
During a recent program in Kano State, Jingir asserted his belief that Nigeria is a Muslim country and advocated for the continuation of a Muslim-Muslim political arrangement. He argued that since Muslims constitute the majority, they should assume the nation’s leadership roles.
In his remarks, the Sheikh also described Christians in Nigeria as “infidels,” suggesting that those unhappy with a Muslim-led government were free to leave the country.
Rev. Dachomo firmly opposed these assertions in a statement released Tuesday, emphasizing that Nigeria is and will remain a multi-religious nation. He urged caution on the part of religious leaders when making public statements that could exacerbate religious tensions.
“The political leadership of Nigeria should be determined by competence, justice, and good governance, rather than by religious demographics,” Rev. Dachomo stated. “Both Muslims and Christians have historically participated in the political process and contributed to the development of the country.”
He further urged religious leaders to consider the implications of their public comments, especially on issues that may affect inter-religious relations. “Linking political leadership to religious majorities could foster the perception that one faith owns the country more than another,” he added.
