NOLLYWOOD — Filmmaker Ugezu J. Ugezu has expressed that Nigerians are willing to pay taxes, provided there is transparency regarding the use of those funds. He voiced his concerns in a video shared on Facebook.
Ugezu emphasized the importance of accountability, stating, “Nigerians are not afraid of paying taxes. They are rather afraid of someone looting the taxes they have paid, and we have seen it happen.” He criticized current tax policies, arguing that discussions about taxes should be accompanied by clear explanations regarding the handling of public funds.
“If there is a system in place that holds accountable those who misappropriate government funds, and if the looters are punished, then the public would be more inclined to comply with tax obligations,” Ugezu noted.
He concluded by urging the government to demonstrate to citizens how tax revenues are utilized, asserting that transparency would lead to a greater willingness among Nigerians to pay taxes.
