Nine passengers killed in Ogun road crash
Nine Killed in Ogun State Road Accident
Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State — A tragic accident on Monday resulted in the deaths of nine passengers on the JBD/Ore route in Ijebu-Ode. The collision occurred around 4:55 p.m. in the Bethel area, involving a white Toyota Hiace bus belonging to Delta Line and a white Sino truck from Bill Gas Solution Ltd.
Authorities report that the accident claimed the lives of three males and six females, all of whom died at the scene.
Afolabi Odunsi, Public Education Officer for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ogun Sector Command, confirmed the details of the incident and indicated that excessive speed was likely a contributing factor. He noted that weather conditions at the time included rain, which had made the road slick.
“The crash occurred while it was raining, creating a wet surface on the road,” Odunsi stated. “Preliminary investigations suggest speed violation as the probable cause of the crash.”
Rescue teams arrived at the location just two minutes after the distress call at 4:58 p.m. The deceased were transported to the General Hospital morgue in Ijebu-Ode, and the involved vehicles were taken to Ilese Police Station for further investigation.
FRSC Sector Commander Oludare Ogunjobi expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and emphasized the importance of road safety. He urged all drivers, particularly those operating commercial vehicles, to exercise caution during rain, adhere to speed limits, and maintain safe distances.
“Speeding is considerably more hazardous on wet roads,” Ogunjobi warned, citing reduced tire grip and visibility as factors that complicate vehicle control.
The accident serves as a reminder of the critical need for heightened awareness and safety practices among all road users.
