NNRA begins nuclear security training for airport, border officials

The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) has launched a Nuclear Security Awareness Training program aimed at enhancing the country’s ability to prevent the illicit trafficking of nuclear and radioactive materials.
The training, which began Monday at the Airport Hotel in Abuja, was inaugurated by Dr. Yau Usman Idris, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the NNRA. Dr. Idris emphasized that nuclear security is an essential aspect of national security that necessitates ongoing vigilance and cooperation between various agencies.
Established by the Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Act No. 19 of 1995, the NNRA is tasked with ensuring Nigeria fulfills its national and international safety and security obligations concerning the use of nuclear energy and ionizing radiation.
While acknowledging the considerable benefits of nuclear technology in sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, research, industry, and energy, Dr. Idris underscored the necessity of safeguarding these materials against theft, unauthorized access, and sabotage. He warned that any compromise in their security could pose significant risks to public safety, national security, the environment, and the economy.
Dr. Idris highlighted the role of frontline officers stationed at airports, seaports, and border crossings, identifying them as the initial line of defense against illicit trafficking. Their ability to identify warning signs and respond effectively is crucial in averting potential security incidents.
“Basic nuclear security knowledge is an essential element of preparedness for officers entrusted with protecting lives, critical infrastructure, and national interests,” Dr. Idris said. He encouraged participants to familiarize themselves with radiation fundamentals, threat assessment, detection techniques, and the procedures for reporting and responding to incidents.
Stressing that no single agency can combat nuclear security threats alone, Dr. Idris called for timely information sharing, clear communication, and coordinated action among all stakeholders involved. He urged participants to take the training seriously, apply the knowledge acquired to their daily responsibilities, and share insights with colleagues within their organizations.
The NNRA remains dedicated to fostering a skilled and vigilant workforce capable of safeguarding nuclear and radioactive materials against malicious acts, ensuring their utilization for peaceful and legitimate purposes. Attendees of the training program include officers from aviation security, Customs, and other frontline agencies operating at the airport.
