Nollywood producers prioritise beauty over talent – Shine Rosman claims

Nollywood Actress Critiques Industry’s Focus on Beauty Over Talent
Nollywood actress Shine Rosman has raised concerns regarding the casting practices of Nigerian filmmakers, asserting that they often prioritize beauty over talent.
In a recent episode of the Baaj and Paul podcast, Rosman stated that this emphasis on appearance is diminishing the quality of performances in the film industry. She noted that the focus on physical beauty has prompted some actresses to undergo surgical procedures to enhance their looks.
“While there are commendable directors who value talent, the majority tend to favor beauty,” Rosman explained. “As a result, many movie stars feel pressured to undergo surgeries to improve their appearances.”
According to Rosman, beauty has been excessively glorified within Nollywood and Nigerian society at large, leading to situations where individuals may miss out on opportunities if they do not conform to certain beauty standards, such as makeup or cosmetic procedures like Brazilian Butt Lifts (BBL).
She further alleged that individuals lacking the necessary qualifications for roles are able to secure them based on their appearance. Rosman implored filmmakers and industry stakeholders to refocus on talent to ensure a more sustainable future for Nigerian cinema.
