Nollywood Actress Highlights Challenges in English Film Industry

Regina Chukwu, a prominent actress within the Yoruba segment of Nigeria’s Nollywood film industry, has expressed concerns regarding the English-language film sector, alleging a culture of favoritism tied to sexual relationships.

In a recent interview with Oyinmomo TV, Chukwu recounted her experiences in the English film industry, stating it is less welcoming compared to its Yoruba counterpart. She described her numerous attempts to secure roles in the sector, particularly at auditions held at Winnings Hotel in Surulere, where many notable actors, including Genevieve Nnaji, have also auditioned.

Chukwu asserted that navigating the English film industry requires compromising personal boundaries, claiming that “to get to the top, you must engage in sexual relations,” a sentiment she views as detrimental to the industry’s integrity.

Originally from the Igbo ethnic group, Chukwu explained that her long-standing connections with Yoruba culture have made her more comfortable within that community. She noted the disparity in recognition between the two sectors, mentioning that although she is well-known in Lagos and other southwestern states, she remains relatively anonymous in her home state of Enugu.

Chukwu’s comments shed light on ongoing discussions about age-old challenges in the entertainment industry regarding exploitation and gender dynamics.
