Nurse dies during asthma attack at Ogun psychiatric hospital as colleague alleges oxygen failure

A nurse, Taiwo Godwin Ayodeji, has died following an asthma attack at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun State. The incident has triggered significant concern and allegations of medical negligence.

Ayodeji, a post-basic nursing student at the School of Nursing, Aro, was known to be an asthma patient. Witnesses reported that he experienced breathing difficulties while playing football and was subsequently transported to the hospital’s emergency unit.

An eyewitness alleged that although Ayodeji was placed on an oxygen apparatus, the oxygen supply was not activated. “I noticed he was on oxygen, but the oxygen was not put on,” the individual stated. The source claimed that by the time medical personnel attended to him, his condition had worsened, presenting with a weak pulse and dilated pupils. Efforts to secure his airway were reportedly unsuccessful, and he was later pronounced dead.

Concerns have been raised among Ayodeji’s colleagues and fellow students, as this incident marks the second time a nurse from the School of Nursing has died at the facility this year.

In response to the incident, the management of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital confirmed Ayodeji’s death and announced an ongoing investigation. In a press statement issued by Public Relations Officer Ajibola Joseph Oluwatoyin Abiola, on behalf of the Acting Provost and Medical Director, the hospital expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Ayodeji while he was under their care.

“The management extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends, colleagues, fellow students, and the entire nursing community over this painful loss,” the statement read.

The facility assured all stakeholders that the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident will be thorough, impartial, and transparent, urging the public to remain calm as the process unfolds. “We remain committed to patient safety, professional accountability, and the highest standards of care,” the statement concluded.
