October 1: ‘Your speech turned Independence Day to lamentation’ – Dele Momodu tackles Tinubu
Dele Momodu, a prominent member of the African Democratic Congress, criticized President Bola Tinubu following the latter’s nationwide address on Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
In a post on his verified social media account on Thursday, Momodu expressed disappointment, claiming that Tinubu’s remarks transformed what should have been a day of celebration into one of sorrow.
Momodu lamented over the President’s analogy, which compared Nigeria to a cancer patient relying on painkillers before the arrival of a “celebrated surgeon.” He argued that the President’s role should have been to stabilize the nation, rather than exacerbate its condition.
The publisher of Ovation Magazine asserted that despite Nigeria’s significant revenue and increasing debt, issues such as insecurity and poverty have worsened, while political leaders remain unresponsive.
“Dear Mr. President, please permit me to wish you a Happy Independence Day on our 66th anniversary,” Momodu wrote. “Today is supposed to be a day of celebration, but your speech turned it into a day of lamentation.”
Momodu emphasized a specific remark from Tinubu regarding the previous administration’s use of morphine, suggesting the analogy was inappropriate and contending that Nigeria under Tinubu might have been at “stage-two cancer, at the worst” when he took office.
