OGEPA begins enforcement, air quality assessment at mining sites in Ogun East
The Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) has initiated an enforcement and assessment exercise at mining sites throughout the Ogun East Senatorial District.
This assessment aims to identify and mitigate environmental and health risks stemming from gaseous emissions and other pollutants generated by mining and industrial activities, as well as to evaluate the environmental documentation of these operations.
Kehinde Bello, General Manager of OGEPA, stated that the exercise seeks to understand the potential impact of emissions from mining operations on both the environment and the health of workers and residents in surrounding communities.
Bello highlighted that prolonged exposure to dust, smoke, and various pollutants produced by mining, quarrying, and blasting activities poses significant risks to respiratory health and adversely affects local environments.
He emphasized that this enforcement initiative will enable the agency to collect crucial data on air quality in mining communities. The findings will inform regulatory measures in instances of environmental violations or non-compliance.
Bello reiterated that the exercise aligns with OGEPA’s broader mission to protect the environment, public health, and to promote responsible and sustainable industrial practices throughout Ogun State.
He urged mining operators to ensure their activities do not jeopardize the health and safety of nearby residents, underscoring the importance of greater environmental accountability within mining communities. Compliance with environmental regulations, he added, is vital for achieving sustainable industrial development in the state.
Mr. Olusesi Opaleye, Head of OGEPA’s Task Force Unit, noted that the assessment focuses on monitoring operational practices that may contribute to air pollution and other environmental hazards.
Opaleye also highlighted that the exercise will serve as an opportunity to educate mining operators about the significance of adhering to environmental regulations. He stressed the importance of obtaining the necessary environmental approvals before commencing operations and adopting safer operational practices to minimize risks to workers and nearby communities.
In a related note, residents living near mining and blasting activities are encouraged to report any suspected environmental violations to the appropriate authorities. OGEPA remains committed to ongoing monitoring, enforcement, and public awareness initiatives to foster a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment for all residents.
