Ogun Assembly directs local councils’ leadership to enforce effective documentation of assets
Ogun State Assembly Calls for Enhanced Asset Documentation by Local Councils
The Ogun State House of Assembly has mandated the leadership of the state’s 20 Local Government Councils to improve the documentation of their assets and financial records. This directive aims to promote transparency and accountability across these councils.
The call was made by the House Committee on Public Accounts and Anti-Corruption, chaired by Damilare Bello, during a session on Wednesday where the committee considered the 2024 report from the Auditor-General for Local Governments. The meeting took place at the Assembly Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
During the session, Bello, along with committee members Babatunde Tella, Folawewo Salami, Dickson Awolaja, Adegoke Adeyanju, Oluseun Adesanya, Ayodele Wasiu, Lukmon Atobatele Lukmon, Bisi Oyedele, Wahab Haruna, and Waliu Owode, reviewed reports from five local councils: Ewekoro, Ijebu North, Ijebu East, and Ifo.
Bello emphasized the importance of timely record-keeping to enhance accountability and oversight of council activities. He urged the councils to compile detailed lists of their landed properties, recover any unauthorized local government identification plates, and ensure that all records related to government assets are properly maintained.
The lawmakers expressed concerns regarding the potential impact of inadequate filing systems on the committee’s ability to assess the councils’ operations comprehensively.
In light of these findings, the committee instructed the councils to submit updated records, complete with thorough explanations and documentation, at a future meeting.
