Olu Jacobs was a national icon — Reno Omokri
Nigerian Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has lauded the late veteran actor Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, commonly known as Olu Jacobs, as a national icon whose illustrious career left an indelible mark on generations of Nigerian performers.
Omokri issued a statement following the announcement of Jacobs’ death at the age of 84, expressing his deep sorrow and reflecting on the actor’s substantial contributions to the African film industry. He noted that Jacobs played a pivotal role in establishing a foundation for today’s cinema, successfully breaking international barriers long before Nollywood gained global recognition.
“Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, better known as Olu Jacobs, was a national icon and a source of pride for Nigeria,” Omokri stated. “His pioneering role as an international thespian inspired many of our countrymen and women and drew today’s stars into television and movie acting.”
Omokri reminisced about watching Jacobs in British television shows and international films during his childhood. He highlighted Jacobs’ professional training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London and recalled his memorable appearances in shows like the British series The Professionals.
Describing Jacobs as a foundational figure in Nigeria’s modern film industry, Omokri placed him alongside his mentor, the late Chief Hubert Ogunde. “Along with Ogunde, he was the real Grand Old Man of Nollywood, having become a global star in the seventies and eighties,” he remarked.
Omokri acknowledged Jacobs’ humility, which he attributed to the misrepresentation by some individuals claiming the title of Nollywood pioneer. “Because of the modesty of Ogunde and Jacobs, especially Mr. Jacobs, who starred in hundreds of Nollywood movies, less deserving individuals have made pretensions to their titles, but history renders their claims hollow.”
In his mourning, Omokri extended condolences to Jacobs’ family, particularly to his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, and their children. “We pray that God Almighty grants comfort to the family he left behind, especially Auntie Joke Silva and their children,” he added.
