Ondo high chief killed by ‘accidental discharge’ during colleague’s funeral rites

High Chief Fatally Shot During Funeral in Ondo State

AYEKA, Ondo State — A tragic incident occurred over the weekend in the Ayeka community of Okitipupa Local Government Area, where a high chief was fatally shot during funeral rites.

The victim, a participant in the ceremony, was struck in the head by a bullet that was accidentally fired amidst the traditional proceedings. Eyewitness accounts and video footage indicate that the shooting took place while high chiefs conducted rituals for a deceased colleague.

The ceremony, attended by family members, community leaders, and local residents, was disrupted as panic ensued following the gunfire. Sources suggest that celebrants may have discharged firearms into the air as part of the customary festivities, leading to the accidental shooting.

As of press time, the identities of both the victim and the chief being honored remained unknown. A source familiar with the incident described the shooting as a result of reckless handling of a weapon.

In response to the situation, Abayomi Jimoh, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ondo State, confirmed that one individual has been arrested in connection with the incident. Jimoh stated that investigations are underway, and further details will be released as they become available.
