One person killed in Kwara auto crash

ILorin, Nigeria — One person was killed in a traffic accident at the Iye-Maja junction along the Oko-Olowo highway on Sunday evening.
The incident occurred around 6:35 p.m. when a commercial bus, identified by the registration number DTH840SA and carrying 21 passengers, lost control due to a tire blowout. The vehicle subsequently rolled over and caught fire.
Hassan Adekunle, spokesman for the Kwara State Fire Service, reported that firefighters quickly responded to the scene and initiated emergency operations. Passengers were evacuated, and those with injuries were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
“Sadly, one person was confirmed dead in the incident,” Adekunle said, extending condolences to the victim’s family while wishing the injured a swift recovery.
Chief Fire Officer Alabi Muhammed also expressed sympathies to the deceased’s family. He advised motorists, particularly those operating commercial vehicles, to ensure their vehicles are well-maintained and roadworthy before embarking on journeys.
He stressed the importance of regular inspections of tires, braking systems, and other critical vehicle components, noting that timely detection of issues can help avert serious accidents. Muhammed urged all drivers to exercise caution on highways and to promptly report emergencies to relevant authorities.
