Oyo State Police Rescue Abducted Teen, Neutralize Suspect

Oyo State Police Command on Sunday announced the rescue of a 15-year-old boy abducted from the Akinyele Local Government Area. The young victim, identified as Sumaila Muhammadu, was taken from the Onidundun area on October 18, 2026, as his captors demanded a ransom for his release.

Police spokesperson DSP Ayanlade Olayinka stated that credible intelligence about the incident was received around 5 p.m. on October 22. Following this information, Commissioner of Police Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga directed the Anti-Kidnapping Section, in collaboration with the Oyo Zone Vigilante Group of Nigeria, to locate and rescue the victim.

The operation took place along the Pipeline, Ajagba axis of Awe–Iwo Road, where a gunfight ensued around 9:30 p.m. after the suspected kidnappers opened fire on the security personnel. Despite the exchange of gunfire, the police successfully rescued Muhammadu, and one unidentified suspect was killed during the confrontation. The deceased was subsequently transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead before his body was taken to a morgue.

During the operation, police recovered an Android mobile phone and a cutlass. The police command has urged residents in the Awe–Iwo Road area and surrounding communities to report any individuals with suspicious gunshot wounds, suggesting that such tips could aid in locating the remaining suspects.

Medical professionals and healthcare administrators are also encouraged to alert law enforcement if anyone seeks treatment for gunshot injuries that may relate to this incident. Reports can be made at local police stations or through established communication channels with the police command.

Commissioner Olugbenga assured the public that the police would continue to conduct intelligence-led operations and enhance collaboration with other security agencies to dismantle criminal networks and combat kidnapping activities in the state. He urged community members to share timely and credible information to bolster security efforts.
