Over 50 victims buried after Taraba gunmen attack – Residents

Residents of the Binnari community in Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State are in mourning following a deadly attack that left over 50 people dead last week. Reports indicate that gunmen assaulted the area shortly after Friday prayers, targeting residents and causing widespread chaos.

Witnesses described a scene of terror as the attackers, estimated to number in the hundreds and arriving on at least 150 motorcycles, descended upon the local market, opening fire indiscriminately. One resident who spoke with BBC Hausa recounted the panic that ensued, stating, “We have never witnessed violence and panic like this before.”

During the assault, many people were engaged in trading when the shooting began. Eyewitnesses reported that in their attempt to escape, some individuals jumped into a nearby pond. The gunmen allegedly surrounded the market from all directions before launching their attack, according to multiple sources within the community.

The Taraba State Police Command has confirmed a death toll of 48, with additional bodies recovering subsequently, leading to a rising count, as stated by police spokesperson Victor Mshelizah. Authorities indicated that some victims drowned while attempting to flee the violence, while others were discovered in nearby forests.

Despite the official figure, residents assert that the number of fatalities exceeds 50. As of now, no group has claimed responsibility for the assault. The attack has left the community in a state of fear and confusion as they grapple with the aftermath.
