Pat Cummins rushes home from India

Australian Test captain Pat Cummins will return home to Sydney because of a family illness.

Cricket Australia says he is expected to rejoin the team ahead of the third Test match in Indore on March 1.

“Pat Cummins has flown home for personal reasons due to a serious family illness,” CA said in a statement.

“He will return to India later this week to re-join preparations for the third Test in Indore. We ask media to respect his privacy.”

Australia slumped to a 2-0 deficit against India following a six-wicket loss in the second Test on Sunday.

The loss means India retains the Border-Gavaskar trophy for the fourth consecutive time – a record since the trophy was introduced in 1996.

Australia resumed day three in a position to mount a series-levelling victory.

However, what soon transpired was a disastrous morning session where they lost nine wickets for just 52 runs.

Set a target of just 115 to win, India swifty tallied the runs before the tea break.

Cummins has taken three wickets at 39.66 in the series so far.

The Australian camp is currently still in Delhi where they will take some time to rest and recover before flying to Indore later this week.

With a shake-up required to claw back some national pride, David Warner and Matthew Renshaw could find themselves out of favour with the selectors.

An injury cloud also hovers after Todd Murphy as he battles a sore side.
