Physicians’ Week: NMA FCT highlights challenges facing doctors in Nigeria

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter, has expressed serious concerns regarding the numerous challenges faced by healthcare professionals in the nation.

During the opening ceremony of the 2026 Physicians’ Week at the Church of Christ in Kado, Abuja, Dr. George Ebong highlighted the significant obstacles that hinder doctors in their duties. He emphasized the severe shortage of adequate medical facilities as a pressing issue impacting healthcare delivery.

The theme for this year’s event is “Securing the Future of Medicine in Nigeria.” Dr. Ebong pointed out that the shortage of medical personnel has adversely affected the doctor-to-patient ratio in Nigeria, which remains well below the standards recommended by the United Nations.

In addition to issues related to compensation, including insufficient salaries and an unfavorable pay structure, Dr. Ebong noted that doctors are often forced to work with inadequate equipment, complicating their efforts to provide quality care to patients.

According to reports, Nigeria currently has one doctor for every more than 6,000 citizens. This year’s Physicians’ Week is expected to continue through the end of the week, bringing attention to the challenges within the healthcare system.
