Police arrest 40-year-old man for alleged killing of pregnant girlfriend in Edo

Edo State Police Arrest Man for Alleged Murder of Pregnant Girlfriend
UROMI, Edo State — A 40-year-old man, identified as Samson Ekata, has been arrested by operatives of the Edo State Police Command following the alleged murder of his pregnant 18-year-old girlfriend.
State Commissioner of Police Patrick Daaor announced the arrest during a press briefing on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. He stated that the incident occurred in the Uromi area of Esan North-East Local Government.
Daaor detailed that the suspect allegedly killed the victim, who had been residing with him for approximately a year. Reports indicate that Ekata mutilated her body, including severing a breast and attempting to remove her unborn child.
In a subsequent interview, Ekata admitted to the crime, claiming it was his first instance of murder. He attributed his actions to what he described as spiritual influence. “I began hearing voices instructing me to kill her, but I initially resisted because she was pregnant,” he stated. He continued, “The same instruction came to me in a dream about two weeks later, prompting me to commit the crime. After killing her, I severed her breast as the spirit instructed me to do so.”
Ekata also mentioned that he disposed of the victim’s body by the roadside after transporting it in a Toyota Corolla. He denied involvement in any other killings, asserting that he had never harmed anyone prior to this incident.
Commissioner Daaor characterized the murder as a horrific crime and expressed deep sadness over the loss of the pregnant woman. He praised community members for their cooperation with law enforcement, which he credited with aiding in the suspect’s arrest.
He assured the public that Ekata would face severe legal repercussions and urged citizens to continue providing useful information to assist in combating crime across the state. Daaor also advised parents to be vigilant regarding the safety of their children, especially daughters, cautioning that sexual predators and other dangerous individuals could exploit vulnerabilities.
Furthermore, he urged young women to exercise care in their relationships and to trust their instincts regarding safety.
Daaor reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting the residents of Edo State and emphasized the importance of collaboration between the public and security agencies to reduce crime rates.
