Nasarawa Police Arrest 62-Year-Old Man for Counterfeit Currency Circulation
Authorities in Nasarawa State have apprehended Mamuda Hassan, a 62-year-old man, in connection with the circulation of counterfeit currency. The arrest occurred at a cattle market in Lafia, where Hassan was allegedly trading with counterfeit N1,000 notes.
Members of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), acting on credible intelligence, located and detained Hassan, a resident of Anchor Zaria in Kaduna State. Police investigations revealed that he acquired the counterfeit currency from an accomplice in Mararaba Akunza, who remains at large.
In a statement, Police Public Relations Officer SP Ramhan Nansel, representing Commissioner of Police Shetima Jauro Mohammed, confirmed the ongoing efforts to track down additional suspects involved in the syndicate.
Nansel emphasized the importance of public vigilance, especially among traders, fuel station attendants, Point of Sale (POS) operators, and transport workers. He urged individuals to be alert for signs of counterfeit currency, including poor print quality, smaller sizes, duplicated serial numbers, and absent security features.
The police advised residents to report any suspicious activity related to counterfeit currency to the nearest police station. Hassan is expected to face charges in court following the completion of the investigation.
