Police arrest officer over alleged extortion of motorist in Lagos

Police Officer Arrested for Alleged Extortion in Lagos

The Nigeria Police Force confirmed the arrest of an officer accused of extorting a motorist in the Idimu area of Lagos State. The incident gained attention following a viral video in which the driver claimed he was stopped despite having valid vehicle documentation.

In the video, the motorist alleged that the officer insisted the vehicle’s color was “grey” instead of “ash,” as stated in the registration papers. The driver reported that he was threatened with arrest before being coerced into paying 30,000 naira, a sum that was later reduced to 10,000 naira.

In a statement on X, the police identified the officer from the viral clip and confirmed his detention. “UPDATE: The officer seen in the viral video as posted by #epiccycl has been identified, arrested, detained and queried,” the statement read. The Lagos State Police declared that they would disclose the findings of the investigation once it is concluded.

The police also emphasized that the officer is undergoing disciplinary procedures, and the results of the internal review will be released to the public.
