Police Confirm Ambush on Residents in Taraba State
The Taraba State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has confirmed an ambush that targeted residents of the Kofai Amadu community in the Takum Local Government Area. The incident occurred on Thursday at approximately 4:00 p.m. in a bustling trading hub, where various ethnic groups were engaged in commercial activities.
Eyewitnesses reported that panic ensued when gunshots rang out from a nearby bush near the yam market. The unexpected gunfire prompted farmers returning from their fields, along with traders and other market-goers, to flee in search of safety.
Amid the chaos, some farmers in nearby farmlands observed armed attackers moving around a settlement located about two kilometers from the market area. As the situation escalated, community members discovered the body of a young man who had sustained gunshot wounds. Residents quickly notified security officials, who arrived at the scene to restore order and initiate a preliminary investigation.
The Kofai Amadu community is urging security agencies to enhance surveillance in the area and ensure that those responsible for the attack are held accountable while awaiting further official updates.
Police spokesperson Victor Mshelizah confirmed the incident, stating that he received reports of an ambush targeting individuals who had entered the area to retrieve personal belongings amidst ongoing crisis. He alleged that the victims were attacked by armed assailants identified as Fulani militia, resulting in one confirmed death as attested by a medical professional.
Mshelizah added that the situation in the area has since been stabilized, with authorities maintaining a presence to ensure calm.
