Police discover over 30 decomposed bodies of suspected bandits in Zamfara

ZAMFARA, Nigeria — The Zamfara State Police Command announced the discovery of over 30 decomposed bodies of suspected bandits during ongoing clearance operations in the region.
In a statement released on Saturday, Police Public Relations Officer DSP Yazid Abubakar reported that the operation, which began on October 28, 2026, is focused on eliminating bandit activity in the Bukkuyum Local Government Area. The initiative was launched following an attempted attack by armed bandits on Bukkuyum town.
The statement detailed that security operatives engaged in a fierce gunfight with the attackers, successfully thwarting the assault and protecting the community from potential harm. “The operation has resulted in a series of confrontations between the armed criminal elements and the police, who are collaborating with local civil security outfits,” Abubakar said.
Despite a significant disparity in firepower, the police demonstrated exceptional professionalism and determination during the confrontation. Authorities reported that more than 30 bodies, believed to be those of neutralized bandits, were found in nearby farmlands. This suggests that the attackers sustained notable casualties during the clash.
The statement noted that armed bandits often evacuate their fallen comrades from battle sites, leaving actual casualty figures uncertain pending further verification.
According to Abubakar, the successful defense of Bukkuyum town prevented the bandits from infiltrating the community and thus averted potential loss of life and property damage. Preliminary security assessments indicate that the pressure from ongoing operations may have forced some remaining bandits to flee the state.
The Zamfara State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to continue these operations in collaboration with other security agencies and stakeholders, aiming to eliminate armed criminal elements, restore public confidence, and ensure the safety of residents.
