Police nab driver for allegedly killing VIO official in Ondo

A 37-year-old man, Ayoade Idowu, has been arrested by the Ondo State Police Command for allegedly striking and killing a Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) official during a traffic check in Akure, the state capital.
Idowu, a resident of Gbogi Street in Akure, was reportedly driving a white Mitsubishi van with the registration number AGL 992 XX when the incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. on Friday along Hospital Road, near Mega Primary School.
The deceased, identified as 35-year-old Sesan Adediji, was on a routine patrol with his team when he attempted to flag down Idowu’s vehicle for a document inspection.
Police Public Relations Officer Abayomi Jimoh confirmed the incident, stating that preliminary reports suggest Idowu initially stopped but then drove away when asked to provide the necessary documentation, resulting in the collision with Adediji.
“The victim sustained serious head injuries and was immediately transported to the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the attending physician,” Jimoh said. “His body has been moved to the hospital’s mortuary for preservation and autopsy.”
Idowu has been arrested and remains in custody as police investigations continue. Officers have visited the scene and commenced further inquiries. The case is expected to be transferred to the Motor Traffic Division for additional investigation.
