Edo Police Arrest Two Suspected Cultists in Benin City
Operatives from the Ugbowo Division of the Edo State Police Command have arrested two individuals suspected of cult-related activities in Benin City.
The arrests were confirmed by Assistant Superintendent of Police Eno Ikoedem, the command’s Public Relations Officer, in a statement released to the media on Wednesday.
According to Ikoedem, the suspects, identified as 21-year-old Victor Peter and 35-year-old Iyemoma Ogbewe, were apprehended on May 21, 2026, around 7 p.m. in the Ohonre Community, located off Adolor College Road.
The police responded to a distress call reporting the presence of suspected cult members in the area while conducting a surveillance patrol. Upon arrival, the officers observed the suspects attempting to flee. A pursuit ensued, resulting in the arrest of both individuals.
Ikoedem stated that the suspects confessed to being members of the Maphite cult group during questioning. Additionally, a cut-to-size gun, believed to be intended for unlawful purposes, was recovered during a subsequent search of the suspects.
The police are continuing efforts to identify and apprehend other members of the group who remain at large.
