Poverty as a Leading Factor of Insecurity in Nigeria – Obasa
Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly Addresses Insecurity Concerns
LAGOS — Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has identified poverty as a significant contributor to insecurity in Nigeria. He made these remarks during his keynote address at the 31st Pre-Ramadan lecture, held on Sunday and organized by the University of Lagos Muslim Alumni.
During the lecture, which featured notable attendees including the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Is’haq Oloyede; the association’s President, Dr. Abdulmumini Alao; and the Chief Imam of Lekki Central Mosque, Dr. Ridwan Jamiu. Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, Governor of Borno State, was represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Umar Usman Kadafur.
In a statement following the event, Obasa emphasized that security extends beyond the responsibilities of law enforcement and is a collective duty shared by all citizens. He underscored the importance of community engagement, urging individuals to take an interest in their neighborhoods.
“Security is not just about the police alone; it is a collective spiritual duty,” Obasa said. He encouraged citizens to be proactive, particularly in monitoring gatherings in their areas.
Obasa also called on political leaders to demonstrate transparency and fairness in their governance. He urged those in positions of power, along with well-resourced Nigerians, to assist the underprivileged in their communities. Such efforts, he noted, would contribute to a more meaningful quality of life for everyone.
“Every time you see people gathered on your street, don’t just drive past; make inquiries as to who they are,” he advised.
He concluded by reaffirming the connection between security and socio-economic conditions, asserting that addressing poverty is essential to combating insecurity in the nation.
