The Spanish XI that faced South Africa in 2002 is a curious collection looking back.

A couple of these players are managers, some are long-retired and one is still playing in La Liga in his 40s. This was a La Roja side who were favoured by some for big things in 2002 – but ultimately a team that fell flat.

Sound familiar? It’s not just 2022 in which they flattered to deceive. The Spanish were fancied in Russia four years ago, while some thought they had enough to defend their crown in 2014, with Diego Costa spearheading the attack.

It’s a very Spanish thing – a team this good… but with little to show for it.
