Rabbitohs legend shafted as in-fighting escalates

Turmoil has hit the South Sydney Rabbitohs with assistant coaches Sam Burgess and John Morris set to depart the club.

The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting both men will leave the club in the immediate future as the club’s season enters crisis mode.

Burgess and Morris’ potential departure marks an incredible 24 hours after it was revealed that Jason Demetriou was under pressure over the influence Latrell Mitchell and Cody Walker have on the squad.

“I think that Jason Demetriou, the coach, is under pressure, not for his job but obviously to get things right and there is a lot of talk he’s having trouble managing the big personalities at the club,” 9News reporter Danny Wiedler said on Nine’s 100% Footy.

“… Souths are trying to invocate a player-led culture, and that’s all very well but sometimes I think the coach is going to have to take charge of that situation and by me saying that, that’s not a surprise to Jason Demetriou, he’s heard this I think internally and I think that’s one of a number of issues they have.”

Weidler also identified a Cody Walker “blow up” at a captain’s run as another issue bubbling away.

Demetriou also apologised on Tuesday morning for an “accidental” like of an abusive Instagram comment towards Jacob Host and Liam Knight.

Rabbitohs legend Burgess has already signed on to coach Warrington Wolves next season while Morris has been linked with a move to the Wests Tigers.

It appears unlikely they’ll be at the club for the remainder of the season, with Ben Hornby to be the sole remaining assistant coach as they stay in the fight for a finals spot.

The Herald stated that Burgess and Morris will be on gardening leave for the rest of the season. Wide World of Sports does not suggest any wrongdoing on the behalf of Burgess and Morris.

South Sydney’s board is reportedly meeting on Tuesday night.
